Overview

At Coral Expeditions, we’re passionate about the locations we are privileged to visit and believe in leaving these environments better than when we arrived. Naturally, we are committed to sustainable practices and are always looking for ways to preserve and protect landscapes both above and below the water. Our voyages showcase the wonders of nature, meaning the health and wellbeing of the land is at the forefront of our mind and is integral to the quality of our expeditions.

Below you will find information on some of the initiatives we have been a part of, including parting ways with plastic straws in 2018, bringing water and supplies to drought stricken small island communities, our onboard education program and involvement in coral species collection for the world’s largest Coral Biobank.

Ship Details

Coral Expeditions is Australia’s pioneering expedition cruise company, sailing for nearly four decades. We operate and manage a fleet of three small expedition ships taking guests to some of the most beautiful, yet undiscovered, regions of Australia, Asia-Pacific, South-Pacific and Indian Ocean islands. Over 8,000 travellers from all over the world travel with us every year who are attracted by our relaxed small ship atmosphere and itineraries which larger ships cannot replicate. At a time when the cruise industry is moving to larger and less personal ships, we have limited the size of our ships to maximise the expedition experience. Our cuisine is prepared small batch on board, and while the style is down to earth, it reflects high quality Australian produce and wine. We operate to high Australian standards of safety with Australian crew wherever we go. We were the first to offer interpretive programs reflective of the destinations we visit and to employ Expedition Leaders, Guest Lecturers, Marine Biologists, and SCUBA Instructors – a tradition that continues today.

Welcome to no queues, no waiting

At Coral Expeditions, we have built our reputation on offering a very different expedition cruise experience.

  • We have no organised entertainment on board – instead, we offer a daily program of lectures, briefings and themed documentaries and movies
  • We do not have multiple glitzy restaurants – but our chefs prepare fresh daily, high-quality cuisine using Australian and local ingredients
  • We do not have ‘formal’ nights or assigned seating – you can dine with whom you please and share the day’s stories
  • We have no room service menus – but our crew will be happy to serve you a meal in-room if you are under the weather or prefer to eat in
  • We do not have minibars – our guests love to mingle over drinks on the sundeck or in one of our comfortable lounges
  • We do not have a casino – but our captains welcome you to the bridge to observe operations and have a chat
  • We don’t have butlers and spas – but all staterooms have their own ensuites, some with balconies, large picture windows or portholes , all outward facing. Serviced daily and come with nightly turndown service.
  • We don’t have a swimming pool – but all our ships have swimming platforms from where you can take a dip in the ocean
  • We do not charge for shore excursions
  • We do not require tips
  • We welcome young and old

Just bring your passion to dream, explore and discover.

The small ship & expedition difference

What is Expedition Cruising:

  • Focus on the destination, not the ship
  • Longer voyages to remote areas
  • Learning & Adventure
  • This is what Coral Expeditions deliver.

With A strong focus on visiting places not often touched by tourists, our shore excursions are designed to promote local interaction and cultural exchange. One of the great benefits of travelling on a small ship is our ability to make impromptu stops in remote locations.
Expedition Leaders and Guest lectures who are experts in the region accompany every voyage. They provide specialist commentary on the culture, geology, conservation, and history of the area and introducing guests to unique plants and wildlife.

Each of our small ships cruise with a variety of excursion boats, enabling you to travel ashore, enjoy excursions and exploratory adventures in the most comfort possible. Each ship is equipped with a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs and, on selected itineraries, a glass bottom boat. But what truly sets Coral Expeditions apart is our unique Xplorer excursion vessels. Xplorer tender vessels offer the ultimate in comfort and convenience. Each ship carries a tender vessel, which is hydraulically lowered and lifted, enabling guests to transfer to excursions right off the main deck

Throughout your cruise you will savour the attentive service of our all-Australian and New Zealand staff. Selected for their high levels of customer service, “can do” attitudes and welcoming personalities, our on-board team will strive to meet your every need, ensuring that your holiday remains truly memorable.

Australian owned, registered and staffed, whichever Coral Expeditions small ship you choose to cruise aboard you are assured of a personalised and unique adventure.

Our small ship fleet

Coral geographer

Launched in March 2021, Coral Geographer is the newest addition to our fleet, purpose-designed to access remote wilderness shores around the world that are often inaccessible to large cruise vessels. Sister ship to Coral Adventurer (launched in 2019), she has over 1000 square metres of open deck space, multiple bars, majority balcony staterooms and suites, and public areas featuring a collection of Australian Indigenous art.

Coral Geographer is as comfortable as she is capable – her design draws on the latest technical advances as well as Coral Expeditions’ 37 years of experience building and operating expedition ships. The ship’s lightweight dual Xplorer tenders, a trademark feature of all our vessels, extend the capabilities of the ship by allowing deeper exploration on shore excursions. These ‘safari jeeps’ of the sea are fast, sturdy, and comfortable and developed to allow easy boarding from the ship and walk-off disembarkation onto remote shores.

Able to navigate into shallow bays, disembark onto remote islands, and visit small villages without overwhelming the environment or community, Coral Geographer explores the hidden nooks and crannies of Australia’s Kimberley Coast, Australia’s West and South coastlines and international voyages including to New Zealand, Sulawesi, Mauritius, and Zanzibar.

Coral Geographer carries a maximum of 120 guests, delivering Coral Expeditions’ renowned warm Australian hospitality, intimate onboard atmosphere, and world-class expedition experience.

Her additional features will include Internal Lift, Gym and facilities to host scientific research or exhibitions

Her shallow draught and manoeuvrability allow her to go where larger vessels cannot. Her tender vessel, “Xplorer”, can seat all 72 passengers for excursions to beaches and rivers. Coral Discoverer is equipped with latest technology active stabilisers to ensure comfortable cruising in open waters and is fitted with modern safety and navigation equipment and wireless internet facilities.

What’s on Board

What our clients say

As a passenger on your Coral Expeditions cruise that departed Darwin on 5 September for Broome this year, I write to express my joy and thanks in having been able to experience the trip of a life time. For someone who was apprehensive about cruise holidays those 10 days proved to me that small ship cruising can be, in a word “great”. It is obvious that in the 31 years your company has been operating, you have gained the experience that showed you have your finger on the pulse for knowing your passengers needs and expectations in the area in which you operate and as a result of their Exploring and Discoveries their Dreams are fulfilled. Management set the policies, procedures and organisation however it’s the people “at the coal face” who make it work. In your case that’s the crew. I realise I am but one voice, however I know I speak for all the passengers on that cruise when I write to express my deep gratitude for their skill, attention to detail, pleasant and friendly attitude and their knowledge and experience in their various jobs. That also extends to our two guests lecturers Mike and Tim. If ever a crew is worthy of a tourism award they are the ones. To your company and “the crew” I say thanks for the memories and the overall experience.

Colin – Australia

I am writing to you today to tell you that my husband and I have recently returned from a Kimberley cruise aboard the Coral Discoverer. We were both extremely impressed with every aspect. From the initial greetings to our final farewell and everything in between. The staff was excellent. Lots of smiling faces to greet you from the engine crew to the Master, Alex. Tanya, the Purser and Nicole her deputy a well ordered and happy crew. Always willing to please. Must also mention Steve, the Expedition Leader, worked really hard to make everything enjoyable. A couple of the passengers had health issues but everything was done so that even they did not miss out on any of the adventures they wanted to take. The itinerary had something for everyone. The food catered for everyone and was well presented. The ship was very clean, comfortable and spacious. Can I also comment on the two guest lecturers, Ian and Martin. This was Martin’s first trip but it only took him a short while to get into his stride. All I can say about Ian is Wow. What a font of knowledge he has and such an entertaining way of passing on that gift. You really need to look after a treasure like him. This was a trip Michael and I have wanted to do for a long time and we are extremely happy that our travel agent suggested Coral Expeditions and the Coral Discoverer. Once again thank you for a truly great experience and a lifetime of memories. The Kimberley is a magnificent part of our vast country.

Aniela & Michael – Australia

I have just returned from this cruise and it was the most amazing experience on many levels. Firstly the crew were an outstanding, professional unit. All were friendly, helpful and carried out their duties with class. Purser Tanya is an amazing asset to this team and I am sure her professionalism brings out the best of her staff. The Expedition leader, Steve, had a wealth of knowledge and made sure we were always safe. Ian and Martin, the guest lecturers were outstanding. Their knowledge and the ability to share that with us was much appreciated. Two very special people. We were also lucky to have friendly fellow passengers and in some cases life friendships were formed. All in all, we shared some wonderful experiences and had lots of fun. Thank you from my son and I for providing such a unique, professionally run expedition. Congratulations. This was a trip of a life time.

Vina – NSW

With my husband Ben we were with the Coral Princess on the cruise from Broome to Darwin on April 21st this year. This cruise was the most enjoyable one we have ever had, mainly due to the very caring Captain Angus, crew, staff, team leaders and fellow passengers. Team leader Lea did tell us all that we were not on a holiday, but an expedition that we would really appreciate – how true those words were. We have not stopped telling everyone that this cruise is the one that everyone should try to take. While we have caravanned around our great country twice, what we were able to experience was so different and reached all those wonderful places that you cannot reach be car. Again our very sincere thanks.

Dawn & Ben – VIC

For years I’ve been longing to do the Kimberley cruise and have just achieved this. – aged 81. It was the best holiday experience of my life. Thanks to both of you for your vision and hard work over years to provide such magic. I know we were especially lucky at this time of year with wonderful sailing weather but the real success was due to the planning and organisation for this trip being outstanding. I’d no idea the scenery would be so breath-taking and varied and the birds and wildlife just wonderful too. I did appreciate the choice of expeditions and activities, with all the crew and guest staff friendly and helpful – and funny! Again we were lucky with a great group of friendly passengers and meal times were a real pleasure for this solo traveller – and I’m still dreaming about the food…. People are asking what made this holiday so special and I think it was the extra thoughtfulness that was evident throughout. Although I’ve done the feedback form I just wanted to thank you personally.

Helen – VIC
