Our History

Welcome to Coral Expeditions and our exciting world of nature-based adventure and expedition cruising by small ship.

Coral Expeditions is a 33 year old Australian expedition cruise company. We operate and manage a fleet of 3 small ships taking guests to some of the most beautiful, yet undiscovered, regions of Asia-Pacific. Over 5,000 travellers from all over the world come to us every year for our relaxed small ship atmosphere and itineraries which larger ships cannot replicate. Our operations are bespoke and sometimes not commercially justifiable, but result in a more personal product.

At a time when the cruise industry is moving to larger and larger ships, we have limited the size of our ships to maximise the expedition experience. Our cuisine is prepared small batch on board, and while the style is down to earth, it reflects high quality Australian produce and wine. We operate to Australian standards of safety with Australian senior crew wherever we go. We were the first to offer interpretive programmes on our cruises and to employ Expedition Leaders, Guest Lecturers, Marine Biologists, and SCUBA Instructors – a tradition that continues today.

Started by a fisherman-entrepreneur with a passion for life at sea, the original Coral Princess was commissioned in 1983. The company has always been based in Queensland, in the tropical north of Australia. Moving from Townsville in 2002 to its current base in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the company pioneered small ship expedition style cruising in the Kimberley, the Islands of the South Pacific and Papua New Guinea.

Many of the additions and developments during this period were innovative for the industry, including the use of interpretive guides and the build and launch of Coral Discoverer (formerly Oceanic Discoverer) in 2005 – a landmark vessel with global ocean capabilities built to very high standards in Australia. The Coral Discoverer remains the only Australian-flagged passenger vessel operating unrestricted international voyages.

Today, the Coral Expeditions fleet has grown to include three purpose-built small ships that can be found anywhere from the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the rugged coast of Tasmania and now, the coastal villages and great rivers of South East Asia. Coral Expeditions remain the only major operator of extended small ship cruises on the Great Barrier Reef.

Our Awards and Accreditations

Coral Princess AwardsOver the past 33 years, Coral Expeditions has built a reputation as Australia’s pioneering cruise line. We’ve received countless awards, including Queensland and Australian tourism awards as the leading tour operator in Australia.

Coral Expeditions is a founding member of the Australian Expedition Cruise Shipping Association, an industry body representing the Australian small ship cruise industry.

As a company we take our responsibilities to the environment very seriously and are proud to be acknowledged as an ecotourism certified operator through the world-leading Ecotourism Australia organisation. Ecotourism is defined as tourism in a natural environment that offers interesting ways to learn about the environment with an operator that uses resources wisely, contributes to the conservation of the environment and helps local communities.

Our Small Ships

Our fleet of two Kimberley expedition style cruise ships has been specifically designed and purpose-built to our exacting standards. Large enough to provide all the modern amenities and comforts of larger cruise ships, yet small enough to enable us to access reef and island sites inaccessible to other vessels, when you cruise aboard a Coral Expeditions small ship you are assured of a unique adventure.

Our two 35-metre catamaran, Coral Expeditions I, accommodates just 46 guests in twin and double Deluxe Staterooms, Upper Deck Staterooms, Staterooms and Cabins. Catamarans offer greater stability in the water and their small size means access to even the hardest to reach locations is made easy.

Our flagship expedition cruise ship, Coral Discoverer, is the most recently launched ship of its type operating in Australian waters today. Accommodating a maximum of just 72 guests, Coral Discoverer’s on-board accommodation comprises 36 spacious modern staterooms. You can select from Bridge, Promenade or Main Deck staterooms offering a choice of twin through to junior king-size doubles.

Throughout your cruise you will savour the attentive service of our all-Australian and New Zealand staff. Selected for their high levels of customer service, “can do” attitudes and welcoming personalities, our on-board team will strive to meet your every need, ensuring that your holiday remains truly memorable.

Each of our small ships cruise with a variety of excursion boats, enabling you to travel ashore, enjoy excursions and exploratory adventures in the most comfort possible. Each ship is equipped with a fleet of inflatable Zodiacs and, on selected itineraries, a glass bottom boat. But what truly sets Coral Expeditions apart is our unique Xplorer excursion vessels. Xplorer offers the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

Australian owned, registered and staffed, whichever Coral Expeditions small ship you choose to cruise aboard you are assured of a personalised and unique adventure.

Dining, On Board Life and Facilities

Shore Excursions & Activities

Cruising the Kimberley with Coral Expeditions is not about just passing through a region and seeing it from the ship’s deck. Instead, each day you will travel ashore and fully immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes, fascinating history and colourful cultures of these remarkable locations.
Whether you’re coming face to face with vibrantly coloured fish as you snorkel over a reef, chatting with the villagers in a remote village of the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea or admiring the ancient Bradshaw (Gwion) Paintings of the Kimberley region, you really will feel like you’re not just seeing these remarkable regions but truly experiencing them.
Our small ships are equipped with a fleet of excursion tenders to make travelling ashore as simple and comfortable as possible. Designed with flexibility and guest comfort in mind, our inflatable zodiacs, glass bottom boats and unique excursion tender ‘Xplorer’ ensure that even the least intrepid adventurer can explore ashore with ease. Our excursion boats board directly from the ship’s main deck, before the hydraulic platform gently lowers into the water, avoiding the need to clamber aboard or get your feet wet.
During your adventure or expedition cruise you will have the opportunity to participate in at least two included shore excursions or activities (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) most days, along with onboard lectures and presentations. The vast majority of excursions are included in your cruise price and in key locations you will have the opportunity to enhance your experience through participation in optional activities such as a helicopter flight over the Kimberley’s spectacular four-tiered Mitchell Falls.
On Great Barrier Reef, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia expeditions you will enjoy ample opportunity to snorkel and SCUBA dive over the South Pacific’s most colourful and pristine coral reefs. Our snorkelling and SCUBA diving departments are fully stocked with a wide range of snorkels, fins and masks (to fit all sizes) along with all the necessary equipment to allow you try the unforgettable experience that is SCUBA diving. Snorkelling equipment will be assigned to all guests at the commencement of each cruise.

Dining

On any Coral Expeditions cruise, you will enjoy fuss-free small batch cuisine prepared onboard using fresh local ingredients. The small size of our ship enables us to make last minute changes based on what is available locally. We understand that high quality dining is a key ingredient of any memorable holiday experience. When you join us aboard our small ships you will savour small batch, modern-Australian cuisine created by our talented chefs using fresh, locally sourced produce.

Our Dining Rooms offer open-seat dining without the need to reserve a table, allowing you to dine with old or new friends on each occasion.

Start the day with your choice of a continental breakfast, complete with cereals, fresh fruits and yoghurts or enjoy a fully-cooked breakfast – we offer a buffet complemented by daily made-to-order specialties. Our lunch buffet showcases a variety of hot and cold dishes; from salads and cold cuts to lighter soups and fresh local seafoods and tropical fruits.

Reflect on each exciting day of discovery and savour the table service and hospitality of our Dining Room staff over a delicious three-course dinner from our table d’hôte menu. There is always a choice of main course options. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be catered for.

Most of our expeditions feature a barbeque or dinner on a deserted beach or picturesque island. When local regulations allow, we make impromptu stops for sunset drinks and canapés.

Lunches and dinners are accompanied by a carefully curated wine list featuring artisanal Australian and New Zealand wines. Table wines and beer during meal service are included on some of our longer cruises.
